Post-operative scar - how to take care of it?

The correct care of the surgical scar is crucial for an effective healing process. Regardless of the area in which the surgical scar is located, adherence to medical advice plays an important role.

Immediately after the operation, the incision area is secured with sutures. Only after the stitches are removed can steps be taken to speed up the healing process and minimise the visibility of scars in the future.

The first weeks after surgery are extremely important. As a rule, scars should be completely isolated from contact with water for a period of several days, as a dressing is usually applied during this period. This important environment supports proper wound healing and minimises the risk of infection. Taking care of this early phase of recovery is crucial to the final appearance of the scars once the healing process is complete.

Three weeks after treatment, scar massage can be introduced, which helps the tissues to heal evenly. This action helps to separate the glued tissue from the scar and stimulate the new tissues to function properly. It is a good idea to seek the help of a physiotherapist who can tailor appropriate exercises to our needs. You can also use massage oil, gently rubbing it into the scar to aid the healing process.

In addition, about three weeks after the removal of the sutures, an important step in scar care is the application of measures to prevent excessive evaporation of water and drying out of the skin. Special silicone gels and patches, available from pharmacies, can be used for this purpose. These products can aid the healing process by giving the skin the necessary moisture.

Scars should be especially protected from sun exposure not only during the first recovery period, but for six months. Covering it with clothing and using high UV filters are effective preventive measures that help to prevent potential discolouration and other undesirable effects.

In addition, it is recommended to refrain from using the swimming pool or sauna for a period of 6 months after treatment.

The process of shaping the final scar takes up to a year. After this time, the post-operative mark is expected to be flat, elastic and similar in colour to the natural skin tone.

It is worth emphasising that following these recommendations will contribute to the best possible outcome in the healing process of the surgical scar.

However, it is important to remember that each type of surgery may require specific care, so it is always advisable to consult your doctor for individual recommendations on scar care after a specific procedure.
